This two year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Motion Picture Medium and Related Studies has been designed to present students with the opportunity to master the knowledge of creating and monetising high quality, engaging narratives that entertain local audiences. Admission Criteria

To be eligible for this course, students must: 

  • Have a Postgraduate Honours (or 4th Year Equivalent) degree in a relevant field and/or; 
  • Ten years in a key capacity in the industry. 
  • Submit a portfolio to demonstrate the relevant intellectual and craft skills for the AFDA curriculum. 
International Students: 
  • A Certified copy of SAQA Certificate of Evaluation of the applicant’s International qualifications is required for acceptance into AFDA programmes
  • International applicants may be required to do the AFDA Entrance Exam in order to be assessed for entry into AFDA’s programmes

To apply for this course, students must: 

  • Complete the online application form 
  • Wait up to 10 days to receive feedback on the application. 
  • Visit the school on a campus tour on an Open Day or book a consultation via Skype on a weekday. 
  • Pay a registration fee once accepted to secure their place to study.

FEES
1st TIME ENROLLING STUDENT FEES: Total R49 900
RETURNING STUDENT FEES: Total R4 950
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT LEVY: R16 500
All 1st time enroling students will need to pay the International Levy upfront before enrolment. This does not apply to Sub-Sahara African countries.

AFDA PAYMENT PLANS 
  1. 100% of Total Fees (fully inclusive of Registration, Enrolment and Course fees) payable upfront during the course-relevant Enrolment window.
  2. Registration and Enrolment fees payable upfront upon or before completing enrolment for the course. Thereafter 50% of the Course fee is payable by or before 31 January 2019, and the remaining 50% of the Course fee is payable by or before 31 March 2019. 
  3. Extended payment plan: 3-9 month credit application subject to credit approval based on NCR regulations. A R1100 (non-refundable) administration fee will be charged on application submission. For further information, please contact the finance department. If the payment deadline is not adhered to, the student will be denied access to the campus and learning programme.

Detailed course information

This MFA is taken on-campus at AFDA. Students can choose one of two elective streams: 

  • Story Adaptation and Screenplay
  • Production (Motion Picture Medium) 

The production outcomes for the Story Adaptation and Screenplay Stream offer the following: 

  • The adaptation of an existing narrative. 
  • The development of an original narrative into: 
    • A full length feature film script
    • A pilot and second episode of a television series and a written outline for the series.
